Type
MRI Scan
Duration
30 min
An MRI of the shoulder joint that images the rotator cuff tendons, labrum, joint capsule, cartilage and surrounding bone without radiation. It is commonly used for shoulder pain, weakness, restricted movement and suspected rotator cuff or labral injury. At Neoscan the scan is performed on a 1.5T scanner with the Ambient Experience environment to make the examination calmer, and reported by radiology specialists. No referral is required for a private appointment.
Shoulder MRI provides a detailed look at the complex soft-tissue anatomy of the shoulder, including the four rotator cuff tendons, the labrum that deepens the socket, the joint capsule and ligaments, the cartilage surfaces and the surrounding bone and bursae. Because these structures are not visible on plain X-ray, MRI is the preferred way to investigate ongoing shoulder pain, weakness, clicking, restricted movement or instability, and suspected rotator cuff tears or labral injuries — frequently after sports or work-related strain. At Neoscan the examination is carried out on a Philips Ingenia Prodiva 1.5T scanner, with the in-bore Ambient Experience environment available so you can choose lighting, sound and projected imagery to help you relax during the scan, which is especially useful for people who find enclosed spaces difficult. For a shoulder study you lie on the scanner table with the joint positioned for imaging and stay still for around 20 to 30 minutes while the sequences run; ear protection is supplied for the scanner noise. Most shoulder scans are performed without contrast, which answers the majority of rotator cuff and labral questions, while a contrast-enhanced option is available where specifically required. Each shoulder is imaged as its own examination, so both shoulders would be booked and priced separately. The images are reviewed and reported by the centre's radiology specialists, with a standard written report in about ten working days and an expedited 48-hour option on request. The report is intended to support your treating doctor. Let the team know in advance about any implants, a pacemaker or pregnancy so your suitability can be confirmed.
