MRCP (Bile Duct MRI)

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

30 min

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a specialised MRI that images the bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreatic duct without contrast or radiation. It is used to assess the biliary system non-invasively. At Neoscan it is performed on a 1.5T scanner with the Ambient Experience environment to keep the scan relaxed, and reported by radiology specialists. No referral is required, and it can be combined with a full abdominal study in one visit.

MRCP — magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography — is a focused MRI technique that produces clear images of the biliary tree: the bile ducts, gallbladder and the pancreatic duct. It relies on the natural signal of fluid within these ducts, so it usually needs no injected contrast and uses no ionising radiation, making it a non-invasive alternative to more invasive procedures for many diagnostic questions about the biliary system. It is commonly used to look for the cause of obstruction or to characterise findings seen on ultrasound. At Neoscan the examination is performed on a Philips Ingenia Prodiva 1.5T scanner with the in-bore Ambient Experience environment, which lets you choose lighting, music and projected imagery to make the scan more comfortable — helpful for anyone who feels enclosed or anxious. You lie on your back and follow breathing instructions while the dedicated sequences are acquired, with the study typically taking around 20 to 30 minutes; ear protection is provided. MRCP is performed without contrast, and it can be combined with a full abdominal MRI in the same appointment when a broader assessment of the abdominal organs is also needed, at a reduced combined price. You may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand so the ducts are seen more clearly. The images are reviewed and reported by the centre's radiology specialists, with a standard written report in about ten working days and an expedited 48-hour option on request. Findings are intended to support your treating clinician. Please tell the team about any implants, a pacemaker or pregnancy before booking so your suitability can be confirmed.
