Lumbar Spine MRI

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

30 min

An MRI of the lumbar (lower back) spine that images the vertebrae, discs, spinal canal and nerve roots, commonly used to investigate low back pain, sciatica and suspected disc herniation. The study uses no radiation and shows soft tissue in fine detail. At Neoscan it is performed on a 1.5T scanner with the Ambient Experience environment to reduce anxiety during the scan, and reported by radiology specialists. No referral is required for a private appointment.

Lumbar spine MRI gives a detailed view of the lower back — the lumbar and sacral vertebrae, the intervertebral discs, the spinal canal and the nerve roots that travel towards the legs. It is one of the most frequently requested musculoskeletal scans because it clearly shows soft-tissue structures without ionising radiation, making it well suited to investigating persistent low back pain, sciatica, leg pain or numbness, and suspected disc herniation or degenerative changes. It is also used to follow up previously identified findings. At Neoscan the scan is performed on a Philips Ingenia Prodiva 1.5T system with the in-bore Ambient Experience environment, allowing you to choose lighting, music and projected imagery to make the examination feel calmer — a feature aimed especially at people who feel claustrophobic or anxious. You lie on your back and remain still for around 20 to 30 minutes while the scanner acquires each sequence, wearing ear protection for the knocking sound it makes. Most lumbar studies are done without contrast; an enhanced option is available where the clinical question requires it. If more than one region of the spine needs imaging, Neoscan offers combined two-segment (1,300 zł) and three-segment (1,900 zł) studies at a lower overall price than booking each level individually. The images are reviewed and reported by the centre's radiology specialists, with a standard written report in about ten working days and a 48-hour expedited option on request. The report is intended to support your treating doctor's assessment. Inform the team beforehand about any implants, a pacemaker or pregnancy so your suitability can be checked.
