Type
MRI Scan
Duration
30 min
A focused MRI of the cervical (neck) section of the spine, showing the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots in detail. It is often used to investigate neck pain, arm pain or tingling, and suspected disc problems. At Neoscan the scan is performed on a comfortable 1.5T system with the Ambient Experience environment to ease anxiety, and reported by radiology specialists. No referral is needed for a private booking, and patients needing more than one spinal level can combine segments at a package price.
An MRI of the cervical spine produces detailed images of the seven neck vertebrae, the cushioning discs between them, the spinal cord and the nerve roots that branch out towards the shoulders and arms. Because it shows soft tissue so clearly and uses no ionising radiation, it is a preferred way to investigate persistent neck pain, pain or numbness radiating into the arms, and suspected disc herniation or degenerative change. The scan can also be used to monitor previously known findings over time. At Neoscan the examination is performed on a Philips Ingenia Prodiva 1.5T scanner with the in-bore Ambient Experience system, which allows you to choose lighting, music and projected visuals to make lying in the scanner more relaxing — particularly helpful for people who feel confined or anxious. You lie on your back on the scanner table and stay still while a series of sequences is acquired, usually over about 20 to 30 minutes; ear protection is provided for the scanner's knocking noise. Most cervical studies are performed without contrast, with an enhanced option available where clinically indicated, for example when looking more closely at certain tissues. If you need imaging of more than one part of the spine, Neoscan offers combined two- and three-segment studies at a reduced overall price compared with booking each separately. Reports are prepared by the centre's radiology specialists, with a standard turnaround of around ten working days and a 48-hour expedited option. Findings are designed to inform your treating clinician. Please tell the team about any metal implants, a pacemaker or pregnancy before booking.
