Type
MRI Scan
Duration
30 min
A magnetic resonance scan of the brain that produces detailed cross-sectional images of brain tissue, the ventricular system and surrounding structures without using ionising radiation. At Neoscan the study is performed on a Philips 1.5T scanner equipped with the Ambient Experience system, which is designed to make the examination calmer for anxious or claustrophobic patients. Reports are prepared by radiology specialists. No referral is required for a private appointment, and the scan can be booked with or without intravenous contrast depending on the clinical question.
Brain MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to build highly detailed images of the brain in multiple planes, with no ionising radiation involved. It is one of the most informative ways to look at soft tissue and is commonly requested when investigating recurring headaches, dizziness, neurological symptoms, or for follow-up of previously identified findings. The images can show the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, brainstem, ventricles and the spaces around the brain in fine detail. At Neoscan the scan is carried out on a Philips Ingenia Prodiva 1.5T system fitted with the in-bore Ambient Experience environment, which lets you select lighting, sound and projected imagery during the examination — a feature intended mainly to help people who feel stressed or claustrophobic, as well as children. A typical unenhanced brain study takes around 20 to 30 minutes, during which you lie still on the table while the scanner acquires each sequence; you will hear the characteristic knocking sounds and wear ear protection. Where the clinical question calls for it, a contrast agent may be given through a small cannula to highlight certain tissues, and this is offered as a separate priced option. Images are reviewed and reported by the centre's radiology specialists, with a standard written description available within about ten working days and an expedited 48-hour report available on request. The findings are intended to support your referring doctor's assessment rather than to provide a diagnosis on their own. Let the team know in advance about any implants, a pacemaker, pregnancy or previous reactions to contrast so suitability can be confirmed.
