Root canal treatment addresses the soft tissue (the pulp) inside a tooth when it becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, typically through deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause pain and abscess and usually leads to losing the tooth. During treatment the dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully shapes and disinfects the narrow canals inside the roots, and then fills and seals them to prevent reinfection, so the natural tooth can be retained and continue to function.
