Root Canal
Duration

Root canal (endodontic) treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and disinfects the canal system and seals it, allowing a tooth that would otherwise need extraction to be kept. NB Dental performs endodontics under a microscope for magnified, well-lit access to the fine canal anatomy. Pricing reflects how many canals the tooth has, and the clinic also offers retreatment of teeth that were root-filled previously but have flared up again.
Root canal treatment addresses the soft tissue (the pulp) inside a tooth when it becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, typically through deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause pain and abscess and usually leads to losing the tooth. During treatment the dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully shapes and disinfects the narrow canals inside the roots, and then fills and seals them to prevent reinfection, so the natural tooth can be retained and continue to function. NB Dental carries out endodontics with the aid of a dental microscope, which provides high magnification and focused illumination of the root canal system. This makes it easier to locate all the canals, including fine or curved ones, to clean them thoroughly and to manage more demanding cases. The number of canals varies by tooth — front teeth often have one while molars commonly have three or four — which is why the clinic prices treatment accordingly. The practice also offers retreatment for teeth that were root-filled in the past but have developed renewed infection, as well as procedures such as removing fractured instruments or sealing canal perforations where needed. A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, so it is frequently rebuilt with a fibre-reinforced core and, on heavily broken-down molars, protected with a crown; the clinic provides these restorative steps. Treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, and any post-treatment tenderness generally settles within a few days.
