3D CT Scan (Cone-Beam Dental Tomography)

Type

CT Scan

Duration

20 min

On-site cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) produces a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures, giving far more detail than a flat X-ray. It is used to plan implant placement, assess bone volume, examine root canals and check wisdom teeth and other surgical cases. NB Dental also offers panoramic and cephalometric X-rays in-house, so the imaging needed for diagnosis and treatment planning can be carried out during the same visit.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a low-dose digital scan that captures a detailed three-dimensional model of the teeth, jawbones, sinuses and nerve canals. Unlike a conventional two-dimensional X-ray, a 3D scan lets the dentist view structures from any angle and measure bone height, width and density accurately, which is why it has become central to careful implant, surgical and endodontic planning. The scan itself takes only seconds and is non-invasive; you stand or sit still while the unit rotates once around your head. At NB Dental the imaging suite is on site, so the clinic can take the views required for your case without referral to an external radiology centre. A CBCT scan is commonly used before placing dental implants, to plan extractions of impacted wisdom teeth or canines, to investigate complex root canal anatomy, and to evaluate bone before grafting. The clinic also offers panoramic (pantomographic) X-rays that show all the teeth and both jaws in a single image, cephalometric X-rays used in orthodontic assessment, and targeted periapical X-rays of individual teeth. Having diagnostics available in-house means findings can be discussed and incorporated into your treatment plan during the same appointment. Imaging involves ionising radiation, and the team will only recommend the views genuinely needed for your diagnosis and care.
