Sinus Lift (Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation)

Type

Dental Implants

Duration

2 hours

A sinus lift raises the floor of the maxillary sinus and adds bone graft material to create enough height for an implant in the upper back jaw, where bone is often thin after tooth loss. Carried out by the surgery and implantology team and planned with the clinic's CBCT scanner, it prepares the site so an implant can be placed securely, either at the same time or after the graft has healed. It is an additional step quoted on top of the implant.

When teeth are lost in the upper back jaw, the bone there often resorbs and the air-filled maxillary sinus can sit too low to allow a dental implant to be placed safely. A sinus lift (sinus floor augmentation) addresses this by gently lifting the membrane that lines the floor of the sinus and packing bone graft material into the space created, increasing the height of usable bone so an implant of adequate length can be anchored. At MultiMedica the procedure is performed by clinicians experienced in oral surgery and implantology and is planned using the clinic's on-site CBCT cone-beam imaging, which shows the sinus anatomy and remaining bone in three dimensions. The surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic. Depending on how much height is needed, the implant may sometimes be placed during the same operation, or the graft may be left to mature for several months before a separate implant appointment. Some swelling and discomfort are normal in the days afterward and are managed with standard post-operative care and advice. A sinus lift is specifically for the upper jaw and is recommended only when imaging shows insufficient bone for a direct implant; it is quoted as an additional procedure on top of the implant fee. The need for grafting, the technique used and the overall timeline are discussed and agreed at an implant consultation supported by the CBCT assessment.
