Ultrasonic scaling first breaks up and removes the hardened calculus (tartar) that builds up along the gumline and between teeth and cannot be shifted by brushing alone. Air-polishing then uses a fine jet of powder and water to lift surface staining from coffee, tea and tobacco and to clear soft plaque from hard-to-reach surfaces. A mechanical polish smooths the teeth so plaque is slower to re-accumulate, and a fluoride varnish is applied to help remineralise the enamel and reduce sensitivity. Delivered across both arches by the clinic's hygienist, the appointment is the standard preventive visit most adults are advised to repeat once or twice a year.
