Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan molecule that occurs naturally throughout the body, most abundantly in the skin, joints and eyes. Its defining property is extreme hydrophilicity — each molecule attracts and binds water up to 1,000 times its own molecular weight — which is why the dermis rich in native HA appears plump and resilient, and why skin depleted of HA through ageing appears sunken and dehydrated. Synthetic cross-linked HA fillers replicate and supplement this scaffolding function: injected into the dermis or subcutis, the gel occupies the space lost to fat atrophy or collagen decline, physically lifting the skin surface and smoothing the contours above it.
