CT Scan

Multi-detector CT scanning at Mount Elizabeth for rapid, detailed cross-sectional imaging of the chest, abdomen, brain, coronary arteries, and musculoskeletal system, with specialist radiologist reporting and same-day results available.
Computed Tomography (CT) scanning at Mount Elizabeth Hospitals uses multi-detector CT (MDCT) technology to produce high-resolution cross-sectional images of the body in seconds, making it the first-line imaging choice for trauma, chest and abdominal emergencies, and oncology staging. Unlike MRI, CT uses ionising radiation (X-ray) but acquires images far more rapidly, making it ideal for acute settings and for imaging patients who cannot tolerate the confined space or long duration of MRI. Chest CT is used to evaluate lung nodules, pulmonary embolism (CT pulmonary angiography), interstitial lung disease, mediastinal masses, and pleural pathology. It is also the standard staging investigation for lung cancer and lymphoma. Abdominal and pelvic CT provides rapid assessment of appendicitis, bowel obstruction, mesenteric ischaemia, renal calculi, pancreatic pathology, and the extent of abdominal malignancy. CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) is a non-invasive alternative to conventional catheter angiography for assessing coronary artery disease, quantifying coronary artery calcium scoring, and evaluating patients with chest pain. The technique requires a low and regular heart rate and is performed with intravenous contrast and prospective ECG-gating to freeze cardiac motion. Mount Elizabeth's cardiology and radiology teams work closely for integrated cardiac CT evaluation. Brain CT is widely used in acute settings for haemorrhagic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and hydrocephalus assessment, as well as for planning neurosurgical procedures. CT-guided biopsy and drainage procedures, performed in the interventional radiology suite, allow minimally invasive tissue sampling of deep lesions under real-time CT guidance. Whole-body or dedicated region CT is available for comprehensive oncology staging. Low-dose CT protocols are used where appropriate to minimise radiation exposure, particularly for younger patients and those requiring follow-up imaging. CT reports are authored by specialist radiologists and typically returned within 24 hours.
