Rather than excising a strip of scalp from the back of the head — which leaves a linear scar and requires suture closure — FUE harvests individual follicular units (groups of one to four hairs as they naturally grow) one at a time using a precision punch instrument. SmartGraft enhances the manual FUE process with a pneumatic (suction-assisted) handpiece that simultaneously extracts the graft and deposits it into a humidified preservation chamber, reducing the time grafts spend outside the body (ex vivo time) and maintaining their viability. The system's automated collection and temperature-controlled storage are designed to improve graft survival rates compared to manual placement in open storage. The harvested grafts are then individually placed into tiny recipient sites created in the thinning or balding areas of the scalp, with the direction and angle of insertion calibrated to match the natural hair growth pattern for a natural-appearing result. Because no linear incision is made, SmartGraft FUE produces scattered small circular punch marks in the donor zone that heal to nearly invisible dot scars; patients can wear very short hairstyles without revealing evidence of the procedure.
