Hair follicles cycle through active growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and resting (telogen) phases; laser treatment is only effective on follicles in the anagen phase when the hair shaft is fully attached to the follicular matrix and the melanin concentration is highest. Because only a fraction of follicles are in anagen at any given time, a series of sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart is required to progressively treat the full follicle population across multiple cycles.
