MRI of the Lower Leg

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

30 min

Magnetic resonance imaging of the lower leg, showing the calf muscles, the Achilles and other tendons, the soft tissues and the tibia and fibula in detail. It is used for calf muscle strains and tears, Achilles tendon problems, suspected stress fractures, soft-tissue masses and unexplained lower-leg pain or swelling. At MojaDiagnoza a lower-leg scan is 739 zł, performed on the centre's own scanner and usually without a referral.

An MRI of the lower leg gives a detailed view of the structures between the knee and the ankle — the calf muscles such as the gastrocnemius and soleus, the Achilles and other tendons, the connective tissues and the two long bones of the lower leg, the tibia and fibula, including their marrow. Because it shows muscle, tendon and early bone changes so clearly, it is the scan typically used to investigate calf strains and tears, Achilles tendon injuries and tendinopathy, suspected stress fractures, soft-tissue lumps and persistent lower-leg pain or swelling that an X-ray cannot explain. At MojaDiagnoza the examination is acquired on the centre's own MRI system, with the leg positioned in the imaging field while you lie still for the sequences, generally around fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Ear protection is provided as the scanner is loud during acquisition. A lower-leg scan costs 739 zł, the same rate as the thigh, hand and foot. Where a soft-tissue mass needs further characterisation, the radiologist may suggest adding contrast, which is arranged separately. The images are described by a radiology specialist and the report and pictures are made available through the RadPoint online portal, usually within around 96 hours. An MRI safety questionnaire is reviewed first, since certain implants or metal fragments can make the scan unsuitable.
