A breast MRI is a highly sensitive imaging study that uses magnetic fields and intravenous contrast to create detailed images of breast tissue. It is typically performed with the patient lying face down on a padded table with dedicated breast coils. The study involves pre-contrast and multiple post-contrast sequences that track how quickly tissue enhances and washes out — a pattern analysis that helps characterize findings. Breast MRI has the highest sensitivity of any breast imaging modality for detecting invasive breast cancer, making it a valuable supplement to mammography in high-risk populations. It is also used for evaluating implant integrity, assessing the extent of known findings, and screening in women with dense breast tissue where mammographic sensitivity is reduced.
