MRI mammography for breast cancer screening and evaluation.
A breast MRI is a highly sensitive imaging study that uses magnetic fields and intravenous contrast to create detailed images of breast tissue. It is typically performed with the patient lying face down on a padded table with dedicated breast coils. The study involves pre-contrast and multiple post-contrast sequences that track how quickly tissue enhances and washes out — a pattern analysis that helps characterize findings. Breast MRI has the highest sensitivity of any breast imaging modality for detecting invasive breast cancer, making it a valuable supplement to mammography in high-risk populations. It is also used for evaluating implant integrity, assessing the extent of known findings, and screening in women with dense breast tissue where mammographic sensitivity is reduced.
Key Details
- Scan Duration
- 30–45 minutes
- Radiation
- None (MRI uses magnetic fields)
- Contrast
- Gadolinium contrast required
- Imaging Type
- MRI imaging
- Common Use
- High-risk breast screening, supplemental imaging
Who Is This For?
Women with a lifetime breast cancer risk of 20% or greater based on family history or genetic factors. Those who carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variants or have first-degree relatives who do. Women with very dense breast tissue where mammography may miss findings. Anyone needing further evaluation of findings detected on mammogram or ultrasound. Women with breast implants seeking integrity assessment.
What's Included
Preparation Required
Schedule the scan for days 7–14 of your menstrual cycle (if pre-menopausal) to minimize hormonal tissue enhancement. You will lie face down on a specialized breast coil. An IV line will be placed for contrast injection. Remove all metal objects and inform the facility of any implants. Fast for 2 hours before if contrast is used. The scan takes 30–45 minutes. Inform your technologist of any kidney concerns, as contrast is excreted through the kidneys.
