A crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a tooth that is heavily filled, fractured or root-treated, restoring its shape, strength and appearance; joined together, crowns also form bridges to replace missing teeth. A dental crown is an individually made restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used when a tooth is too broken down, cracked or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling, or to protect a tooth after root canal treatment, and it rebuilds the tooth's natural shape, biting strength and appearance. When several crowns are linked together they form a bridge, which can replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the teeth on either side of the gap. At MM Kaczmarek the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic and an impression or scan is taken for the dental laboratory; a provisional crown — made either chairside or in the lab — protects the tooth in the meantime. Where a root-treated tooth needs extra retention, a cast post-and-core can be made to support the crown.
