Crowns & Bridges

Duration

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a tooth that is heavily filled, fractured or root-treated, restoring its shape, strength and appearance; joined together, crowns also form bridges to replace missing teeth. MM Kaczmarek offers full-ceramic and zirconia crowns for a natural look, as well as porcelain-fused-to-metal and composite options. A temporary crown is fitted while the laboratory makes the final restoration.

A dental crown is an individually made restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used when a tooth is too broken down, cracked or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling, or to protect a tooth after root canal treatment, and it rebuilds the tooth's natural shape, biting strength and appearance. When several crowns are linked together they form a bridge, which can replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the teeth on either side of the gap. At MM Kaczmarek the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic and an impression or scan is taken for the dental laboratory; a provisional crown — made either chairside or in the lab — protects the tooth in the meantime. A range of materials is available to suit the tooth and the look you want: full-ceramic and zirconia crowns offer the most natural, metal-free aesthetics and are popular for visible teeth, while porcelain-fused-to-metal and composite crowns are also offered. Where a root-treated tooth needs extra retention, a cast post-and-core can be made to support the crown. The dentist will discuss which material is best for the position of the tooth, your bite and your priorities, and how a crown compares with alternatives such as an inlay, onlay or, for missing teeth, an implant. Existing porcelain crowns can often be repaired rather than replaced if they chip. Well-made crowns and bridges are a long-lasting way to restore function and confidence, and good hygiene around them helps them last.
