About this treatment

Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen with contrast combines cross-sectional X-ray imaging with an intravenous contrast agent — an iodine-based dye injected during the scan — that makes blood vessels and many soft-tissue structures stand out more clearly. The result is a detailed map of the abdominal organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen and bowel, that allows a radiologist to assess them in considerable detail.

A contrast-enhanced abdominal CT is commonly requested to investigate abdominal pain or other digestive symptoms, to characterise findings seen on ultrasound or other tests, and to follow up known conditions; a combined abdomen-and-pelvis protocol is available when a wider field is needed, and a non-contrast version is offered where contrast is not required or not suitable.
