Importantly, any pigmented mole or changing lesion is first assessed by the dermatologist, ideally with dermatoscopy, because removal method and the need for histological examination depend on that evaluation — and a lesion with any concerning features is managed appropriately rather than simply destroyed. Treatment of a benign lesion is usually quick, performed under local anaesthetic where needed, and leaves a small wound that is kept clean while it heals; some lesions may need more than one session. Aftercare includes protecting the area and sun protection to reduce marking.
