The lipidogram provides the four key lipid measurements needed for cardiovascular risk stratification. Total cholesterol gives the headline number, but the clinical value lies in the breakdown: LDL cholesterol (the primary atherogenic particle), HDL cholesterol (associated with cardiovascular protection), and triglycerides (elevated in metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and high-carbohydrate diets). Modern cardiovascular risk assessment focuses on the total cholesterol-to-HDL ratio and non-HDL cholesterol (total minus HDL) as more predictive markers than any single value. European Society of Cardiology guidelines use these values alongside age, sex, smoking status, and blood pressure to calculate 10-year cardiovascular risk (SCORE2 model).
