The complete blood count is the single most commonly ordered laboratory test worldwide, and for good reason — it provides a broad overview of haematological health in a single sample. The test measures red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit (packed cell volume), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and red cell distribution width (RDW). Together these parameters classify anaemias by type: iron-deficiency (microcytic), B12/folate-deficiency (macrocytic), or chronic disease (normocytic). The white blood cell count with automated differential breaks down neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Neutrophilia suggests bacterial infection; lymphocytosis points to viral infection or chronic lymphocytic conditions; eosinophilia raises the question of parasitic infection or allergy. Platelet count screens for bleeding or clotting risk.
