The internal-medicine (interna) clinic at Poliklinika Kounicova, led by MUDr. Šurel, provides specialist outpatient assessment for adults with complex or chronic conditions — most commonly high blood pressure, diabetes, heart and circulatory problems, and unexplained symptoms referred on from a GP. The consultation combines a detailed history and physical examination with interpretation of laboratory results, including inflammatory markers (such as CRP and ESR) and iron-status indices (ferritin, serum iron, transferrin), to build a whole-body picture and plan ongoing management. It is delivered under the Czech public-insurance model on GP referral, so for insured patients there is normally no charge.
Internal medicine (vnitřní lékařství, or interna) is the specialty that takes a whole-body view of adult health, focusing on the diagnosis and long-term management of conditions affecting the heart and circulation, metabolism, digestive system, kidneys and blood. At Poliklinika Kounicova the outpatient internal-medicine clinic is run by MUDr. Šurel and works closely with the on-site GP and radiology teams, so investigations can be coordinated within the same building. A consultation typically starts with a thorough history covering symptoms, existing diagnoses, medication and family background, followed by a focused physical examination — heart and lung auscultation, blood-pressure measurement, abdominal examination and assessment of circulation. The internist then orders and interprets the laboratory and imaging tests needed to reach or refine a diagnosis. Blood work commonly includes inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) to detect or monitor inflammation and infection, and iron-status testing — ferritin, serum iron, transferrin and transferrin saturation — to investigate anaemia or iron overload. Where imaging is needed, the polyclinic's radiology service can provide X-ray and ultrasound on site. Because the Kounicova blood-draw room is currently not in operation, sampling is arranged through an associated collection point, and the clinic advises where. The internal-medicine clinic is suited to adults referred with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk, persistent inflammation, suspected anaemia, or non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness or unexplained weight change that warrant specialist review. For chronic conditions it provides ongoing monitoring, medication adjustment and coordination with other specialties. Patients are usually asked to bring previous results, a current medication list and any referral letter, and to attend fasting if metabolic bloods are planned. Care is provided on GP referral under public health insurance, so for insured patients there is normally nothing to pay; this is a specialist medical consultation rather than a self-pay wellness panel.
