A pre-operative examination is the medical clearance a surgeon or anaesthetist needs before a planned operation, confirming that you are fit for anaesthesia and surgery. At Medicas Brno a GP carries out a focused history and physical examination, performs a resting ECG, and reviews or orders the laboratory tests appropriate to your age, health and the planned procedure. The visit ends with a written report (posudek) documenting fitness for the operation. It is delivered in a single appointment at a fixed price, the same for self-payers and for patients using their own insurance, which makes it straightforward for people scheduling surgery in Brno or abroad.
A pre-operative examination — předoperační vyšetření — is the standardised medical assessment required before most planned surgical procedures. Its purpose is to confirm that a patient can safely undergo anaesthesia and surgery, to surface any conditions (such as undiagnosed heart disease, poorly controlled blood pressure or diabetes, or a clotting problem) that could complicate the operation, and to give the surgical and anaesthetic team a clear baseline. At Medicas Brno the assessment is carried out by a general practitioner in a single visit. The doctor takes a focused history covering current medication, allergies, previous anaesthetics and any chronic conditions, performs a physical examination, and records a resting twelve-lead ECG to check cardiac rhythm and rate. Depending on your age, general health and the type of operation planned, the GP reviews or orders the laboratory tests typically expected before surgery — for example a full blood count, basic biochemistry and coagulation studies. Where blood work is needed it can be drawn at the practice and sent to an external laboratory, with the cost of the analysis billed separately by the lab. Once the results are in and the examination is complete, the doctor issues a written fitness-for-surgery report (posudek) that you take to your surgeon or hospital. This service is for anyone with a scheduled operation who has been asked to provide pre-operative clearance, including patients having elective surgery in the Czech Republic and medical travellers coordinating a procedure in Brno. It is best arranged a couple of weeks ahead of the surgery date so there is time for any laboratory results and, if the GP recommends it, an optimisation step such as adjusting medication or arranging a specialist opinion. Bring details of the planned procedure, the requesting surgeon's requirements, your current medicines and any recent test results. The examination itself is low-risk and non-invasive; the only minor discomfort is the blood-pressure cuff and, if taken, the venous blood draw.
