Type
MRI Scan
Duration
1 hour
A contrast-enhanced MRI examination of the small bowel and surrounding structures, used to evaluate inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, and other intestinal pathology. Requires a physician referral and recent kidney function test results.
MRI enterography provides detailed imaging of the small bowel wall, mesentery, and surrounding structures using contrast enhancement to highlight areas of active inflammation, strictures, fistulae, and abscesses. The technique is the preferred imaging modality for monitoring Crohn's disease activity and assessing treatment response, as it avoids the cumulative radiation exposure of repeated CT enterography. The examination requires oral preparation to distend the bowel loops and intravenous gadolinium contrast to enhance the bowel wall and adjacent tissues. Because contrast agents are filtered by the kidneys, a recent kidney function test (creatinine and eGFR) is required before the scan, along with a physician referral documenting the clinical indication. Both the Vision Towers 3T scanner and the Eiffel Clinic 1.5T Siemens Magnetom Aera can perform this examination. The radiologist report details bowel wall thickness, enhancement patterns, and any extraluminal findings, providing actionable data for the referring gastroenterologist.
