A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Over a healing period the bone integrates with the implant surface, creating a stable foundation onto which a custom crown is later fitted. Because the implant stands on its own, it replaces a single missing tooth without grinding down the healthy teeth on either side, and it helps preserve the surrounding bone that otherwise tends to shrink after tooth loss.
