A crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a tooth that is heavily filled, cracked, root-treated or weakened, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. Medent offers a range of materials from durable porcelain-fused-to-metal to highly aesthetic full-ceramic and zirconia crowns that closely match natural enamel. The dentist recommends the most suitable option for the tooth's position and your priorities, with a temporary crown provided while the final one is made.
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over a prepared tooth to rebuild it when too much natural structure has been lost for a simple filling to be reliable — for example after extensive decay, a fracture, or root-canal treatment that leaves the tooth more brittle. By fully encasing the visible part of the tooth, a crown restores its strength, shape, bite and appearance, and can also be used to improve the look of a discoloured or misshapen tooth. At Medent the tooth is first prepared by removing decay and shaping it to receive the crown, and an impression or scan is taken so the crown can be made to fit precisely; a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime. The clinic offers several materials to balance strength, aesthetics and cost: porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine a strong metal core with a porcelain surface; full-ceramic crowns such as IPS Empress and e.max offer excellent translucency for front teeth; and zirconia crowns provide both high strength and a natural appearance, making them versatile across the mouth. A porcelain-on-gold option is also available for patients who prefer it. The dentist discusses which material suits the specific tooth, your bite and your aesthetic priorities, and how a crown fits into any wider plan such as a bridge or an implant restoration. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups a well-made crown can serve for many years; care advice is provided at fit.
