A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be restored — because of severe decay, advanced gum disease, fracture, or impaction in the case of wisdom teeth. While MEDENT's emphasis is on saving teeth wherever possible, there are situations where removal is the healthiest option, and it is carried out under local anaesthetic so the procedure itself is not painful. Simple extractions involve loosening and lifting the tooth from its socket; surgical extractions, such as for an impacted or partially erupted wisdom tooth (the 'eights'), may require a small incision and are priced accordingly. Before more complex removals the clinic can use 3D CBCT cone-beam imaging to assess the shape and position of the roots and their relationship to nerves and the sinuses, which is associated with safer, better-planned surgery. After an extraction the dentist provides clear aftercare instructions — managing the blood clot, what to eat, and how to keep the area clean — to support comfortable healing and reduce the risk of complications such as a dry socket; some swelling or discomfort for a few days is normal and usually settles with simple measures. The clinic also offers a laser frenectomy (release of a restrictive lip or tongue tie) under anaesthetic.
