The dentist first checks that your teeth and gums are healthy and suitable, then takes an impression or digital scan to make thin, custom whitening trays that fit closely over your teeth. You wear the trays at home with a measured amount of professional whitening gel for a set period each day over roughly one to two weeks, following the dentist's instructions.
