Laser vascular treatment works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: by selecting a wavelength absorbed preferentially by haemoglobin (the pigment inside red blood cells), the laser energy heats the blood within the target vessel without significantly heating the surrounding tissue. This temperature rise coagulates the vessel contents and damages the vessel wall enough to trigger its closure.
