Laser tattoo removal uses pulses of laser light to break up tattoo ink so the body can gradually clear it, fading the tattoo over a series of sessions. At Med-Derm the same approach is used to lighten or remove unwanted permanent makeup. Because ink is cleared progressively, several sessions spaced a few weeks apart are needed, with the number depending on the tattoo's size, colours, age and depth.
About this treatment
Laser tattoo removal works by delivering very short, high-energy pulses of laser light that are absorbed by the tattoo pigment and shatter it into tiny particles. The body's immune system then gradually clears these fragments over the weeks following each session, so the tattoo fades progressively rather than disappearing at once. The same principle is applied to unwanted or poorly placed permanent makeup, which can be lightened or removed.
At Med-Derm the area is assessed first, as the number of sessions needed varies considerably with the tattoo's size, age, depth, colours and the ink used; older and faded tattoos often clear more readily than dense, multi-coloured or recently applied ones.
