Laser Tattoo & Permanent Makeup Removal

Type

Tattoo Removal

Duration

30 min

Laser tattoo removal uses pulses of laser light to break up tattoo ink so the body can gradually clear it, fading the tattoo over a series of sessions. At Med-Derm the same approach is used to lighten or remove unwanted permanent makeup. Because ink is cleared progressively, several sessions spaced a few weeks apart are needed, with the number depending on the tattoo's size, colours, age and depth.

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering very short, high-energy pulses of laser light that are absorbed by the tattoo pigment and shatter it into tiny particles. The body's immune system then gradually clears these fragments over the weeks following each session, so the tattoo fades progressively rather than disappearing at once. The same principle is applied to unwanted or poorly placed permanent makeup, which can be lightened or removed. At Med-Derm the area is assessed first, as the number of sessions needed varies considerably with the tattoo's size, age, depth, colours and the ink used; older and faded tattoos often clear more readily than dense, multi-coloured or recently applied ones. Each session is relatively quick, and patients typically describe a sharp, snapping sensation; cooling and comfort measures are used, and the treated area may be red, swollen or form a light crust for a few days afterwards. Sessions are spaced several weeks apart to allow the skin to recover and the body to clear pigment between treatments. Aftercare — keeping the area clean, avoiding picking and using sun protection — supports healing and reduces the risk of marking. The clinician sets realistic expectations about how many sessions your particular tattoo is likely to need and reviews any contraindications before starting; removal is avoided over active infection and in pregnancy.
