Dermoscopy (Mole & Skin Lesion Examination)
Type
Consultation
Duration
30 min
A dermoscopic examination uses a handheld magnifying device with polarised light to inspect moles and other pigmented or suspicious skin lesions in detail. At Med-Derm a dermatologist reviews the structures and patterns within each lesion that are not visible to the naked eye, helping to decide which marks are best monitored and which warrant removal or biopsy. It is a quick, non-invasive part of skin-cancer awareness and mole checks.
Dermoscopy is a non-invasive examination in which a dermatologist views the skin through a dermatoscope — a magnifier with controlled lighting that reveals colours, structures and vascular patterns inside a mole or lesion that the unaided eye cannot see. At Med-Derm it is used as part of a structured skin check to evaluate individual moles a patient is worried about, to assess lesions that have changed, or to survey multiple moles in people with a lot of pigmented spots. The examination itself is painless and takes only minutes per lesion; nothing is cut or removed during dermoscopy. The dermatologist interprets the findings and explains whether a lesion looks reassuring and suitable for ongoing observation, or whether it should be removed and sent for histological examination. Where removal is advised, the clinic performs minor surgical excision of skin lesions and arranges laboratory analysis, quoted separately. Regular dermoscopic review is associated with earlier detection of changes in moles and is commonly recommended for people with many moles, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or significant sun exposure. The dermatologist will advise how often a follow-up check is sensible for your skin.
