Tooth extraction becomes necessary when a tooth cannot be restored — for example through extensive decay, fracture, advanced gum disease or a problematic wisdom tooth — or to relieve crowding and infection. A simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth is usually quick and done under local anaesthetic, with gentle techniques to preserve the surrounding bone. Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth that are only partly through, or lying against the nerve, require a minor surgical removal; here the clinic's cone-beam CT imaging is valuable for mapping the roots and their relationship to the inferior dental nerve and sinus, helping to plan a safer procedure. Where the site is being prepared for a future implant or simply to encourage good healing, the dentist may carry out socket preservation using PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) — a concentrate spun from a small sample of your own blood that is rich in healing factors and placed into the socket. Because it is derived entirely from you, it is well tolerated. After any extraction you receive clear aftercare instructions covering bleeding control, eating, hygiene and what to expect during healing, plus advice on replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge if appropriate.
