Microscope-assisted endodontic treatment to save a tooth with infected or inflamed pulp rather than extracting it. Working under high magnification, the dentist removes the diseased tissue, cleans and disinfects the fine root canals, and seals them to prevent reinfection. The microscope improves visibility of the canal anatomy, which is associated with more thorough cleaning and better outcomes, especially in molars or complex re-treatment cases. Pricing reflects the number of canals; a post and crown often complete the restoration.
Root canal (endodontic) treatment is needed when the soft pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed — often from deep decay, a crack or trauma — causing pain, sensitivity or an abscess. Rather than removing the tooth, the treatment cleans out the diseased pulp, disinfects the internal canal system and seals it, allowing the natural tooth to be kept and continue functioning. At Materna Dental this is carried out under a dental operating microscope, which magnifies and illuminates the canal openings and inner anatomy that are often impossible to see clearly with the naked eye. Better visibility supports more complete location and cleaning of the canals — including extra or curved canals in molars — which is associated with higher long-term success. After numbing the tooth and isolating it with a rubber dam to keep the field clean and dry, the dentist removes the pulp, shapes and disinfects each canal, and fills them with a sealing material; the access cavity is then restored. The clinic also handles more demanding scenarios such as re-treatment of a previously root-filled tooth that has reinfected, removal of a separated instrument, and sealing of a perforation with MTA. Because a root-treated tooth can become more brittle, it is frequently rebuilt with a glass-fibre or cast post and protected with a crown — particularly on back teeth that bear heavy chewing forces — and the dentist will advise on the best final restoration. Fees scale with the number of canals treated.
