A laser treatment that targets excess melanin to lighten sun spots, age spots and uneven pigmentation, breaking down the pigment so the body can clear it. It can be focused on the whole face or on individual spots and is well suited to sun-damaged skin on the face, neck, décolleté and the backs of the hands. A short series usually gives the most even result, with strict sun protection essential afterwards.
Laser pigmentation removal uses selectively absorbed laser light to target the excess melanin responsible for sun spots, age spots, freckling and patches of uneven tone. The energy is preferentially absorbed by the pigment, fragmenting it so that it darkens briefly and then flakes away or is cleared by the body over the following days and weeks, leaving more even-toned skin. It is one of the more effective options for the kind of diffuse sun damage that creams struggle to shift. At MASI the area is cleansed and the laser passed over the targeted pigment; a session is usually quick, from a few minutes for a single spot up to around half an hour for the full face. You may feel a light snapping sensation, and treated spots typically darken and then crust lightly before shedding — it is important not to pick at them. Mild redness settles within hours to a day. Because pigment sits at different depths and responds gradually, a short series of sessions spaced several weeks apart often gives the most even clearance, and rigorous daily SPF is essential both to protect healing skin and to prevent new pigmentation. The treatment suits sun-damaged skin on the face, forehead, cheeks, neck, décolleté and the backs of the hands. Some pigmentation, such as certain hormonal melasma, behaves unpredictably with laser, so the physician assesses the type of pigmentation and your skin at a free consultation before recommending treatment, which is avoided over suspicious lesions and in pregnancy.
