Treatment begins with a discussion of what you want — more hydration and a tidier border, a little extra volume, or correction of asymmetry — and the doctor selects an appropriate product from a range that spans lighter gels for first-time patients up to firmer products for more definition.

A strong topical anaesthetic is applied and the filler products also contain lidocaine, so the procedure is generally well tolerated. The gel is placed with a fine needle or cannula and shaped by hand; results are immediate, although lips commonly swell for 24–48 hours and small bruises can occur.
