Retinol 3% Medical Peel

Type

Chemical Peels

Duration

30 min

The 3% retinol medical peel at MarBelle Clinic is a step-up formulation for patients who have either completed the 1% peel series or have prior experience with retinoid treatments. At three times the concentration, the 3% peel produces more pronounced cell turnover acceleration, deeper collagen signalling, and a more visible exfoliation response — making it appropriate for more established acne scarring, moderate pigmentation, and more significant texture irregularities. Recovery involves up to one week of peeling, and results are more noticeable than the introductory formulation.

Moving from 1% to 3% retinol in a medical peel programme represents a meaningful increase in treatment intensity. While the mechanism remains the same — retinol binds to nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs and RXRs) after being converted intracellularly to retinoic acid, triggering gene expression changes that accelerate keratinocyte maturation and increase collagen production — the higher concentration reaches a greater proportion of cells and at greater dermal depth, producing a proportionally stronger response. In clinical terms, the 3% formulation is indicated for: more established post-acne scarring (shallow atrophic, rolling, and post-inflammatory pigmentation); moderate photoageing changes (deeper fine lines, mottled pigmentation, rough texture); and sebaceous skin with persistent enlarged pores. Patients who tolerated the 1% well without adverse reaction are typically transitioned to 3% after two to three sessions, or may begin at 3% if their skin background (dark olive or naturally thick) suggests good tolerance. The application protocol follows the same sequence as the 1% peel — cleanse, degrease, apply, observe, neutralise and post-care — but the physician observes more carefully for signs of frosting or erythema that would indicate a more aggressive reaction than anticipated. The active contact time may be adjusted accordingly. Recovery at the 3% level typically involves a more pronounced peeling phase of four to seven days, during which the skin appears dry and flaking progresses from fine powder-like exfoliation to more visible shedding. This is normal and expected. Patients should moisturise frequently, apply high-factor SPF daily, and avoid active exfoliation or rubbing. Following the peeling phase, the skin typically reveals notably smoother, brighter, and more even-toned results. A series of five to seven treatments at minimum ten-day intervals (to allow complete re-epithelialisation and healing between sessions) is the standard approach. The spacing is important: treating before the skin has fully recovered from the previous peel risks accumulation of irritation and compromised barrier function.
