The 1% retinol medical peel at MarBelle Clinic is a physician-grade superficial peel using retinol — the alcohol form of vitamin A — at a concentration that accelerates cell turnover, mildly exfoliates the skin surface, and signals the dermis to increase collagen production. At 1%, this is the introductory concentration suitable for patients new to retinol treatment, those with sensitive skin, or as part of a progressive series building toward stronger formulations. Recovery time is a few days of mild flaking or dryness, and the treatment is well suited to addressing fine lines, mild acne, and early pigmentation.
Retinol (vitamin A alcohol) is one of the most scientifically validated active ingredients in skincare, with decades of clinical evidence supporting its ability to accelerate keratinocyte turnover, increase epidermal thickness, upregulate dermal collagen synthesis, and inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (the enzymes responsible for collagen degradation in photo-aged skin). Medical retinol peels, applied by a physician at concentrations significantly higher than cosmetic products, deliver these effects more rapidly and thoroughly than home-use formulations. At MarBelle Clinic, the 1% retinol peel represents the entry concentration — appropriate for patients who have not used prescription retinoids previously, those with naturally sensitive or reactive skin, or those being introduced to a progressive peel series in which concentration increases over successive sessions as the skin acclimatises. The application procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. The skin is cleansed and degreased, the retinol formulation is applied in an even layer, and the patient is observed during the brief reaction period before neutralisation and post-care are applied. Unlike stronger acid peels (TCA, glycolic at high concentrations), retinol peels produce their effect primarily through receptor-mediated cellular signalling rather than bulk chemical exfoliation, so the immediate physical sensation is mild — typically warmth and light tingling. The post-treatment experience at 1% typically involves two to four days of increased skin dryness, possible mild peeling or flaking, and temporary heightened UV sensitivity. Simple moisturiser and SPF 50 are sufficient aftercare. The skin should not be rubbed or exfoliated additionally during this period. For most patients, the 1% peel is used as the first step in a series of five to seven sessions at minimum ten-day intervals, with the expectation that later sessions may progress to the 3% formulation once the skin has adapted. The full course addresses mild photoageing, early acne-related skin changes, uneven tone, and fine surface lines.
