Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: a wavelength is chosen with high absorption by the target chromophore (melanin in the hair shaft and follicle bulb) relative to the surrounding tissue. The Asclepion MeDioStar uses a diode wavelength that penetrates to the depth of the hair follicle papilla, where the stem cells responsible for hair growth are located. The rapid thermal energy deposited at this depth damages the papilla's cellular machinery permanently or semi-permanently, preventing or significantly reducing future hair production from that follicle. The critical limitation of laser hair removal is its restriction to follicles in the anagen (active growth) phase — only at this stage is the follicle bulb connected to the hair shaft and able to conduct the laser energy efficiently. At any given time, approximately 15–20% of follicles in a given area are in anagen, with the rest resting (telogen) or regressing (catagen). This is why multiple sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart are required: each session targets the currently active cohort, and successive sessions clear the follicles that enter anagen between treatments. The MeDioStar incorporates cooling technology — a chilled contact tip or integrated cooling system — that protects the epidermis during treatment, reducing both pain and the risk of surface thermal injury. This makes the treatment comfortable for the majority of patients; a rubber band snapping sensation is the most common description. Areas with dense, dark coarse hair (underarms, bikini) typically provide the most dramatic results — 70–90% permanent reduction after a full course. Finer or lighter hairs respond more slowly and may require more sessions. For facial hair in women, particular care is taken with parameter selection, as the face has a high density of fine vellus hairs that should not be treated (treating vellus hair can inadvertently stimulate paradoxical hypertrichosis in some skin types). The physician assesses the facial hair type and selects the appropriate energy density. A full course for most body areas is six to eight sessions at four-to-six-week intervals. Annual top-up sessions are often needed as dormant follicles are recruited over time.
