Root canal (endodontic) treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them to save the tooth. Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is used to save a tooth whose inner pulp — the soft tissue containing the nerve and blood supply — has become inflamed or infected, often from deep decay, a crack or trauma. The dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots, disinfects them and seals them with a root filling, allowing the natural tooth to be kept rather than extracted. The tooth is then usually restored with a filling or a crown to protect it. The microscope is particularly valuable for more complex situations — the clinic lists procedures such as removing a fractured instrument left from previous treatment, removing a post, or reopening a blocked canal, each 700–1,000 zł, and rebuilding a missing tooth wall before treatment for 200 zł. Treatment is performed under local anaesthesia and may take one or more visits depending on the tooth. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days. The dentist will explain how many canals are involved, the likely number of appointments and the recommended final restoration, since a back tooth that has had root canal treatment is often best protected with a crown.
