Porcelain Inlay / Onlay

Type

Crowns & Bridges

Duration

1 hour

An inlay or onlay is a custom, laboratory-made restoration that repairs a tooth with more damage than a simple filling can handle, but which does not need a full crown. At LuksDent a porcelain inlay/onlay is 2,100 zł and is bonded precisely into or over the prepared tooth for strength and a natural look. A lower-cost composite version is 1,500 zł. These restorations are a durable way to rebuild larger cavities in back teeth while preserving healthy tooth structure.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that sit between a filling and a crown in how much of the tooth they rebuild. An inlay fits within the chewing surface of a back tooth, while an onlay also covers one or more of the cusps (the raised points). They are used when a tooth — usually a premolar or molar — has too much damage or an old, large filling to be restored well with a direct filling, but still has enough sound structure that a full crown would be more than necessary. Because they are made to fit exactly and bonded in place, inlays and onlays restore strength while conserving more of the natural tooth. At LuksDent a porcelain (ceramic) inlay or onlay is 2,100 zł, and a composite inlay/onlay is offered as a more economical option at 1,500 zł. Treatment typically takes two visits: at the first the tooth is prepared, decay or the old filling removed, and an impression or digital scan taken; a dental laboratory then fabricates the restoration to match the tooth's shape and shade. At the second visit the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and bonded to the tooth, and the bite is adjusted. Ceramic restorations are hard-wearing and blend with the natural tooth, making them well suited to visible and load-bearing back teeth. The dentist will advise whether a filling, inlay/onlay or crown is the best choice for a particular tooth, and how to care for it afterwards.
