Chinese Cupping Therapy (60min)

Type

Massage Therapy

Duration

1 hour

A 60-minute traditional Chinese cupping therapy session using suction cups to improve blood circulation, release muscle tension, reduce inflammation, and promote pain relief through controlled negative pressure on the skin and underlying tissues.

Chinese cupping therapy (拔罐, bá guàn) is one of the oldest manual therapy techniques in traditional Chinese medicine, with documented use dating back over 2,000 years to the Mawangdui silk texts. The practice involves placing cups on the skin to create localised suction (negative pressure), which draws blood flow to the treated area, lifts and separates fascial layers, and triggers a cascade of physiological responses including increased local circulation, lymphatic drainage, and the release of myofascial trigger points. The suction is typically created using either fire cupping (heating the air inside a glass cup to create a vacuum as it cools) or modern silicone and pump cups that allow precise pressure control. The cups may be left stationary on specific acupuncture points or meridian lines (stationary cupping), or moved across oiled skin in a gliding motion (sliding cupping) to treat larger muscle groups. Treatment areas commonly include the back, shoulders, neck, and legs. The distinctive circular marks left by cupping — often mistaken for bruises — are actually 'petechiae' caused by the controlled rupture of superficial capillaries under negative pressure. These marks are diagnostically meaningful in traditional Chinese medicine: darker marks are interpreted as indicating greater stagnation of blood and qi in that area, while lighter marks suggest better underlying circulation. The marks typically fade within 3 to 10 days and are not painful. Modern research has begun to validate several mechanisms underlying cupping therapy. A systematic review published in PLOS ONE found evidence supporting cupping for pain reduction in conditions including lower back pain, neck pain, and knee osteoarthritis. The proposed mechanisms include increased local blood flow (measured via laser Doppler), activation of the body's endogenous pain modulation system through the gate-control mechanism, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and mechanical release of fascial adhesions. At 180 PLN (approximately €42), Lewitarium's cupping therapy session provides a substantial 60-minute treatment at a price point well below Western European manual therapy rates, where similar sessions typically cost €60-100. The treatment can be booked as a standalone session or combined with other Lewitarium services for a comprehensive wellness visit.
