Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate that has evolved beyond earlier PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) technology. At Lemmon Avenue Plastic Surgery, PRF is produced by centrifuging a small sample of the patient's blood at a lower speed than standard PRP protocols — a process that preserves a higher concentration of platelets, white blood cells (leukocytes), and stem cells within a natural fibrin matrix rather than in liquid plasma. The fibrin matrix structure is significant: it acts as a slow-release scaffold that retains and gradually releases growth factors — including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) — at the injection site over a period of one to two weeks rather than releasing them immediately as liquid PRP does. This slower, sustained release mirrors the natural wound healing signalling cascade and may support more durable collagen stimulation and tissue regeneration. For PRF injections, the concentrated material is drawn into syringes immediately after centrifugation (before the fibrin fully polymerizes) and injected into target facial areas — commonly the under-eye tear trough, midface, perioral zone, and forehead — where it supports volume, collagen activity, and skin quality improvement over weeks.
