The laser wavelength is chosen to match the absorption peak of melanin — the chromophore responsible for hair and skin pigmentation — while being transmitted through the surrounding skin with minimal absorption. When the laser pulse contacts the hair shaft, the melanin absorbs the light energy and converts it to heat; this thermal energy conducts from the melanin-rich hair shaft into the surrounding follicular structures (the dermal papilla and hair matrix cells) at the base of the follicle, disrupting their proliferative function and impairing or eliminating the follicle's capacity to grow new hair. The treatment is effective only on follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) — follicles in the resting (telogen) or regressing (catagen) phases lack a mature hair shaft to conduct heat to the follicular papilla and are unaffected by the session. Because typically only 15–20% of follicles in any given area are in anagen at any one time, multiple sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are required to capture successive waves of follicles as they enter the active phase.
