Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid) Double Chin Treatment

Type

Fat Reduction

Duration

30 min

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) injections to permanently reduce submental fat (double chin) without surgery. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that disrupts and destroys fat cell membranes when injected into the submental fat pad, with the body clearing the disrupted cells over four to eight weeks. Most patients require two to four treatment sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Swelling for three to five days is expected post-treatment. Results are permanent once the fat cells are eliminated.

Kybella, offered at Lemmon Avenue Plastic Surgery, is an FDA-approved injectable formulation of synthetic deoxycholic acid — a bile acid naturally produced in the body and used physiologically to emulsify and absorb dietary fat in the intestine. When injected directly into the submental fat pad (the localized fat deposit that produces the appearance of a double chin), deoxycholic acid disrupts the structural integrity of adipocyte cell membranes through a detergent-like mechanism, causing cell lysis and releasing the intracellular lipid content. The cellular debris and released lipids are then cleared through the local lymphatic drainage and macrophage phagocytosis over the subsequent four to eight weeks. Because deoxycholic acid destroys the adipocyte cells themselves rather than simply reducing their lipid content, the treated fat cells do not return once cleared — the results of a completed Kybella course are associated with being permanent, as destroyed fat cells cannot regenerate. The treatment requires precise injection placement in a grid pattern within the submental fat pad, staying above the mandibular border and below the dermal layer to avoid the marginal mandibular nerve branch and the overlying skin. Session duration is approximately twenty to thirty minutes. Most patients experience meaningful swelling, temporary numbness, and localized hardness in the treated area for three to five days post-injection, which represents the inflammatory response to fat cell disruption — the expected treatment response. The number of vials required per session and the number of sessions depends on the volume of submental fat present. Clinical trials on Kybella reported that 59% of treated patients required fewer than four treatment sessions; the maximum approved course is six sessions spaced at least four weeks apart. When surgical results are the priority for large submental fat deposits, the clinic may recommend liposuction or neck lift as a more definitive alternative.
