About this treatment
An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket, recommended when a tooth cannot be saved by filling, root canal treatment or a crown — for example with extensive decay, advanced gum disease, a fracture below the gum, or a wisdom tooth that is impacted or repeatedly inflamed. Before a surgical extraction the team can use panoramic or cone-beam imaging to assess the position of the roots and their relationship to nerves and the sinus, which helps plan a safe approach. A maxillofacial surgeon is part of the practice for difficult or surgical cases. Where there is an acute abscess, the centre also lists incision and drainage to relieve infection.
After an extraction you are given clear aftercare instructions to encourage a clot to form and the socket to heal, including guidance on bleeding, swelling, eating and oral hygiene in the first days.
