Ear Correction Surgery (Otoplasty)

Type

Facelift

Duration

1 hour

Otoplasty at GISANT corrects prominent or protruding ears and cartilage deformities by reshaping the ear cartilage through an incision placed behind the ear, where the scar is hidden. The procedure takes about an hour and can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, and on one ear (CZK 8,000) or both (CZK 16,000). It is offered from around age five — before a child starts school — once the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed. A head dressing is applied after surgery, with the first dressing changed on day two and the full dressing removed at around day fourteen.

Prominent ears are usually a matter of cartilage shape rather than ear size — most often the antihelical fold (the inner ridge of the ear) is underdeveloped, allowing the ear to project outward. Otoplasty at GISANT corrects this by accessing the cartilage through a discreet incision behind the ear, then reshaping it to recreate the natural fold and bring the ear into alignment with the side of the head. The clinic treats one ear for CZK 8,000 or both for CZK 16,000, and the procedure takes approximately one hour under local or general anaesthesia depending on the patient's age and preference. Because the incision is placed in the crease behind the ear, the healed scar is concealed from the front and barely visible from behind. The surgeon uses cartilage scoring and suturing techniques to achieve a natural-looking correction that avoids an over-pinned appearance. GISANT performs otoplasty from around age five — typically before a child starts school, to spare them the social impact of prominent ears — once the ear cartilage has developed enough to hold the correction. After surgery a protective head dressing is applied; the first dressing is changed on day two, and the full dressing is removed at around day fourteen. A soft headband is often worn at night for a further period to protect the repositioned cartilage. Most patients return to everyday activities within a few days, with strenuous activity staged over the following weeks. Otoplasty is suitable for both children (from around five) and adults bothered by protruding ears or cartilage irregularities. Blood-thinning medication should be discontinued before surgery as advised, and the patient should be free of acute illness. A consultation establishes the degree of correction needed and the most suitable anaesthesia.
