Mastopexy addresses breast ptosis — the descent of breast tissue that occurs when the skin envelope and supporting ligaments stretch over time. Unlike breast reduction, the volume of breast tissue is largely preserved; the operation focuses on reshaping the tissue and lifting the nipple-areola complex to a youthful height. The surgeon selects the incision pattern according to the degree of sag: minor ptosis can be corrected with a peri-areolar (doughnut) incision, moderate ptosis usually needs a vertical (lollipop) scar, and significant ptosis is addressed with an inverted-T (anchor) pattern that provides the greatest reshaping and lift. After surgery, stitches are removed at around two weeks and a sports or compression bra is worn to support the healing breast.
