The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia for the upper lids or under general anaesthesia for more extensive work, and takes roughly half an hour to an hour and a half depending on configuration. GISANT provides a detailed post-operative kit and instructions: cold compresses (gel packs and black-tea compresses) for the first one to two days, sleeping with the head elevated through the first week, and Maxitrol eye drops for lubrication and infection control. Aescin is taken before and after surgery to reduce swelling and bruising. Stitches are removed at seven to ten days, and most patients return to their normal routine in about a week.
