In-office teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel, sometimes activated by a specialised lamp, to lighten the shade of the natural teeth under dental supervision. It addresses general yellowing and staining from food, drink, tobacco and age; it does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, which is why a shade assessment is done first and why discoloured restorations may need replacing to match a whiter result. Some temporary sensitivity to cold is common for a day or two afterwards, and avoiding strongly coloured food and drink in the first days helps preserve the result. Whitening is suited to adults with healthy teeth and gums and no untreated decay; it is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The dentist checks suitability, sets realistic expectations about the achievable shade, and advises on maintenance at the assessment.
