Root canal (endodontic) treatment is needed when the soft pulp inside a tooth — containing its nerve and blood supply — becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, often through deep decay, a crack or trauma. The procedure removes this damaged tissue, then cleans, shapes and disinfects the fine canals inside the roots before sealing them, which relieves pain and allows the natural tooth to be kept rather than removed. After successful root canal treatment a tooth is often more brittle and is usually protected with a permanent restoration — a filling or, for back teeth, a crown or onlay — which is arranged separately.
