Breast augmentation (Brustvergrößerung) places implants — silicone gel being the most common choice — to increase volume, improve symmetry or restore breast tissue lost after pregnancy or weight changes. During consultation the surgeon discusses implant size, shape, surface texture and the most appropriate incision site, along with placement (above or below the pectoralis muscle) to suit each patient's anatomy.
Breast reduction (Brustverkleinerung) relieves physical symptoms such as back and shoulder pain, postural strain and skin irritation caused by disproportionately large breasts, while reshaping and lifting the breast at the same time. It is one of the few breast procedures that statutory insurers may fund where a medical indication is documented.
